Robeson Re-Explored is Sir Willard White’s magnificent tribute to Paul Robeson, the concert singer, athlete, star of stage and screen, and civil rights campaigner.
One of the world’s most celebrated figures, Paul Robeson brought to his audiences a rich baritone voice, a moral force and grand presence: all captured in this programme of music indelibly connected to Robeson, including the spirituals Steal Away and Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho, the Gershwin classics A Woman is a Sometime Thing and I Got Plenty o’ Nothin’, Song of the Volga Boatmen, Joe Hill, and – of course – Ol’ Man River.
The much-loved bass baritone Sir Willard White made his debut at New York City Opera and sings regularly at the Royal Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera, the opera houses of Amsterdam, Berlin, Geneva, Hamburg, Paris, and at the Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg Festivals. He is joined for this very special event by two superb jazz musicians.
