Pre-concert talk with Soweto Kinch and Kevin Le Gendre, 7.15pm

Combining great sax playing and rap, Soweto Kinch is one of a kind. His abundant technique, astonishing eloquence, deep passion and fierce intelligence all feed into his performances; he plays saxophone and raps with a real physicality, as if his life depended on it.

Soweto brings his newly recorded project The New Emancipation to the Festival. Trailing fantastic reviews, it explores contemporary slavery in the modern world – the bailiffs, debt-collectors and telephone credit sharks, and the psychotic, anarchic spirit behind our current economic crisis. The music will play to a backdrop of powerful visuals specially commissioned for Soweto Kinch and premiered at Bath International Music Festival.

Twice a winner of MOBO awards and a trained historian, Soweto Kinch’s journalistic, street-savvy music weaves powerful Mingus-like writing and Sun Ra joyfulness with swinging grooves and soul influences. His raft of strong, engaging performers – with special guest Byron Wallen – will blow the roof off.
