Pre-concert lecture: James MacMillan on the politics of traditional music 7pm
The brilliant Kathryn Tickell came to us with an idea, wanting to ask her favourite composers for arrangements of folk tunes she’s been playing since she was a little girl – and tonight is the culmination of those happy discussions. We’re delighted, in collaboration with BBC Radio 3, to present a riveting tapestry of new music intermingled with traditional fiddle and pipe tunes.
Kathryn has chosen composers with a love of folk music. Howard Skempton and Michael Finnissy’s unique voices bloom with beauty; Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davis, has long found inspiration in the North, founding the St Magnus International Festival and still living on Sanday. Alasdair Nicolson’s music is influenced by his native Isle of Skye, and James MacMillan’s folk pieces celebrate his beloved Celtic Football Club.
An evening of friends, music, history, sharing – join us for this truly special night in the Festival.
