Bath Festivals produces a year round education programme bringing a great range of opportunities for young people to engage and develop their creativity through music.
This year’s opening Children’s Procession and Festival Commission will be a vibrant display of Brazilian Carnival, celebrating London 2012 and looking ahead to Rio 2016. We are working with schools from across Bath and North East Somerset and welcome back composer and percussionist Adriano Adewale to create a new piece of music and Carnival Procession which will draw inspiration from Brazil and England’s strong musical and sporting traditions. The music will accompany a dazzling carnival procession, with dancers dressed in flamboyant costumes, which will wind its way from the Holburne Museum into Bath Abbey to herald the start of Party in the City. Make Music Happen is a project offering young people the opportunity to create, perform and promote music. We have been running outreach sessions, intensive workshops and events across Bath and North East Somerset over the past few months.
During the festival young people involved in the project will be filling the egg Theatre with bands and performers on Party in the City night, testing their event promotion and production skills which they have been developing through a series of industry workshops. They will also be creating new music during two days of intensive workshops (page 31) with our Make Music Happen tutors plus a special guest. This year we are working in partnership with the Holburne Museum and Eye Music Trust to deliver a series of workshops that link colour, music and science for children with special educational needs and elderly care home residents. The Clore Learning Space at the museum will be transformed into a soft, enclosing fabric space with primary coloured LED lights, surrounding the participants in colour and sound. Infra-red and movement sensors control both music and colour so that the participants can control the whole experience.
